The FIFA World Cup is the biggest stage for international football. Every four years, it draws billions of viewers and showcases top teams from around the world.
But some countries, despite their large populations and devoted fans, have not made it to this grand event.
From Asia to Africa, many nations with millions of football lovers have not turned their potential into World Cup appearances. Issues like lack of investment, poor football facilities, competition from other sports, and weak development programs have kept them away from the World Cup.
On Tuesday, Planet Football reported that India is the most populous country never to qualify for a FIFA World Cup. With over 1.4 billion people, India has a growing football culture, but cricket still rules the sports scene. India qualified for the 1950 World Cup in Brazil but pulled out before the tournament and has not played in the finals.
Indonesia comes next with nearly 278 million people. Modern Indonesia has never made it to the World Cup, but the Dutch East Indies, its colonial predecessor, participated in the 1938 tournament. Indonesia's hopes for the 2026 finals ended during the later stages of Asian qualifying.
Pakistan is third on the list with more than 243 million people. Football is overshadowed by cricket, and the national team has not seriously competed for a World Cup spot.
Bangladesh, with around 169 million people, is fourth. The country is known for its excitement during World Cup seasons, with many fans supporting Argentina and Brazil. Still, its national team has never qualified for the tournament.
Ethiopia is in fifth place. With over 125 million people, it is one of Africa's most football-loving nations. Ethiopia got close to qualifying for the 2014 World Cup but lost to Nigeria in the final round of African play-offs.
The last three countries on the list are the Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand. Football is becoming more popular in Southeast Asia, but none of these nations has made it to the World Cup finals.
These rankings remind us that having a large population does not guarantee success in football. Strong domestic leagues, good coaching, youth development programs, and consistent investment are essential for reaching the biggest stage in the sport.
Here are the countries ranked by their population:
- Thailand, 71 million
- Vietnam, 99 million
- Philippines, 113 million
- Ethiopia, 125 million
- Bangladesh, 169 million
- Pakistan, 243 million
- Indonesia, 278 million
- India, 1.4 billion
