A leader of the African Democratic Congress, Dele Momodu, has said Peter Obi can beat President Bola Tinubu in the South-East and parts of the South-South during the 2027 presidential election.

Momodu mentioned that Obi, who was the Labour Party’s candidate in the 2023 election, is still popular in these regions. He believes Obi could be a serious challenge to Tinubu’s chances of winning again.

He made this known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday. They were discussing how the opposition might perform in the 2027 elections.

“I can tell you something. Soludo is the same. I can bet my life on it that Peter Obi will humiliate and disgrace Soludo in Anambra state. I have no question about that,” Momodu said.

He referred to Obi as a “rock star” in the South-East and South-South. He argued that Obi's popularity could hurt Tinubu’s chances in these areas.

“Peter Obi is a rock star. Where he comes from, especially in the South-East and the South-South,” he said.

Despite this, Momodu stated that he supports former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar. Atiku is also looking to challenge Tinubu in 2027 under the ADC.

He said he would be glad if opposition leaders could unite. He believes that if they work together, it could change the election's outcome.

“I’m supporting Atiku, but I will be very happy when people say, ‘Oh, if you people don’t come together, you are going to lose election,’” he said.

Momodu added that Tinubu would have a tough time if Obi keeps his influence in the South-East and South-South. He said Tinubu would need strong support from these areas while also competing in the North.

“The scenario is different this time. Peter Obi will humiliate Tinubu and all his supporters in the South-East and some parts of the South-South. And that’s dangerous for Tinubu,” he said.

He noted that for Tinubu to win, he must secure all three southern regions. He also needs to fight for support in the North.

“For Tinubu to win, he needs to lock down all the three regions in the South, and he now has to go and struggle in the North, where, number one, he was supported last time by President Muhammadu Buhari,” Momodu said.

Tinubu won the 2023 presidential election, while Obi came third behind Atiku, who ran under the Peoples Democratic Party.

Obi got a lot of support in the South-East and parts of the South-South during the 2023 election. Tinubu’s victory came from votes across various parts of the country.

The 2027 presidential election is shaping up to be a fierce contest among major political parties. Opposition figures are being urged to form a united front to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress.
