The Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Agency has arrested 279 suspected criminals in a major operation. This crackdown targeted problem areas, hideouts, and shanties throughout the state.

Prince Ifalade Oyekan, the General Manager of the agency, shared this news on Monday. He spoke while showing the suspects at the agency’s headquarters in Bolade, Oshodi. This information was also posted on the agency’s Facebook page.

PUNCH Metro found out that the operation took place late Sunday into Monday. It is part of the Lagos State Government's ongoing efforts to eliminate crime and ensure law and order.

Oyekan explained that the operation was based on intelligence gathered from the agency’s community informants and operatives. This helped them identify crime hotspots in various parts of Lagos.

Among the 279 suspects, there were 274 males and five females. They came from different areas of the country. They were arrested for various crimes, including theft and public disturbance.

Oyekan pointed out that many of the arrested individuals did not have identification. They also could not provide valid residential addresses.

Some of those caught for public nuisance had arrived in Lagos in trucks and vehicles typically used for moving livestock and goods. He emphasized that while every Nigerian can live and move freely anywhere in the country, Lagos State will not accept criminal acts that disturb the peace.

Oyekan commented on the operation, stating, "The exercise is in line with the mandate of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat. We want Lagos to remain the safest state in Nigeria, even with its growing population."

He added, "With our intelligence network and help from other security agencies, we will keep ensuring that law-abiding residents feel the presence of government. Criminals will find no safe place in Lagos."

The General Manager also mentioned that two suspects were caught trying to steal a submersible pumping machine from a home. Others were found with dangerous weapons such as machetes and knives, as well as illegal drugs and other banned items.

Oyekan reiterated that the agency is committed to public safety. He said the operation will continue and expand with other security and enforcement agencies in the state.

He warned criminals and those with bad intentions to stay away from Lagos or face severe consequences.

The suspects have been moved to the Lagos State Special Offences Mobile Court for further investigation and possible prosecution.
