ADC leader calls for fairness in Kogi ward formation

A leader of the African Democratic Congress, Usman Okai, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure fairness in the creation of new electoral wards in Kogi State.

In a statement on Friday, Okai asked the electoral body to follow the legal and administrative rules for this exercise, considering factors like population density and the size of the land.

He stressed that the new wards should represent the interests of all three senatorial districts, especially Kogi East.

Okai said, "The ward-creation exercise must adhere strictly to established legal and administrative parameters, including population density and geographical landmass."

He urged INEC to handle the process as a neutral body and make sure no senatorial district is left behind.

He stated, "There is no justification for excluding Kogi East, the most populous region with the largest landmass in the state, from the exercise."

Okai also asked all stakeholders from the three senatorial districts to support a fair and open process. He believes the results should bring unity and fairness in the state.

He said, "INEC leadership should act as impartial public servants for the entire state rather than favouring a single zone."

The ADC leader further requested a thorough review of the ward creation plan before it is put into action, saying all important factors need to be taken into account.

Okai reminded INEC that its chairman is respected across all three senatorial districts in Kogi State. He urged the body to stick to fairness in its duties.

He added, "The ward-creation exercise should be conducted in a manner that would strengthen confidence in the electoral process and promote unity among the people of Kogi State."

Kogi State includes three senatorial districts: Kogi East, Kogi Central, and Kogi West. Each district has several local government areas and electoral wards.

Kogi East has nine local government areas: Ankpa, Bassa, Dekina, Ibaji, Idah, Igalamela/Odolu, Ofu, Olamaboro, and Omala.

Kogi West consists of seven local government areas, while Kogi Central has five local government areas.
