The African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council has criticized President Bola Tinubu's government for not addressing insecurity. They say a comment by Senator Abdulaziz Yari, the Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, shows that the ruling party lacks confidence in its ability to keep the country safe.
The ADC-PCC reacted to Yari’s statement, which said, "If Buhari, who is a retired military man, could not wipe out insecurity, what can Tinubu do?"
In a statement signed by Kola Ologbondiyan, the council labeled Yari’s comment as a sign of failure from a senior APC member who is supposed to support Tinubu's re-election.
They questioned why the APC would seek another four years when they have not solved one of the primary duties of government: protecting lives and property.
“For a party that has been in power for nearly 12 years, this is a shocking admission of failure. Instead of giving hope to Nigerians, the statement from the Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council shows that the ruling party has run out of ideas and does not have good solutions for the nation’s security issues,” the statement said in part.
The ADC-PCC noted that Nigerians are still facing banditry, terrorism, kidnappings, and killings, while families live in fear. They said Yari’s comment raises doubts about the APC's ability to present a solid security plan before the 2027 presidential election.
“Now, the APC’s own campaign chief seems to be telling Nigerians that if a former military Head of State could not defeat insecurity, there is little President Tinubu can do. This is not how a party that offers hope should speak; it shows helplessness from a party asking for another chance,” the council stated.
The opposition campaign body also challenged the APC to explain why Nigerians should give them another chance amid ongoing security issues and economic struggles. They asked, “How can the APC ask Nigerians to renew its mandate when its own campaign leadership is casting doubt on its presidential candidate’s ability to handle insecurity?”
The council emphasized that Nigeria needs leaders ready to take responsibility for security rather than just making excuses. They urged the Federal Government to show the political will to protect citizens and improve how security agencies work together. They also called for better intelligence gathering and support for security personnel.
The ADC-PCC introduced its presidential candidate, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, as a better option than the APC. They said he has the experience and plans needed to tackle the country's security and economic problems.
According to the council, Atiku’s plan includes strengthening security, investing in modern policing, using technology in operations, and creating jobs for young people to help reduce crime.
The campaign council stressed that insecurity cannot be fixed with political promises alone. They argued that ongoing investment, effective cooperation, and strong leadership are necessary for real change.
They urged Nigerians to think about the country’s security record when deciding whether to support the APC in 2027. “The choice before Nigerians is clear: continue with a party whose record on insecurity has drawn widespread criticism, or support a credible alternative committed to saving the country, building public trust, and prioritizing the protection of lives and property,” the statement added.
The ADC-PCC called on voters to demand clear and practical commitments from the parties. They insisted that Nigerians deserve a country where safety is a priority, not just an empty promise.
Nigeria’s security problems are a big topic in political discussions. There are continuing issues with terrorism and banditry in the North, along with kidnappings and attacks on communities raising public alarm.
The APC, which has been in power since 2015, wants to keep its position in the 2027 elections. Meanwhile, opposition parties are focusing on security, economic recovery, and public welfare as key issues for the campaign.
