Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has told the Special Task Force on Environmental Sanitation to check out communities hit by recent floods and make a plan to help. Floodwaters have damaged homes, businesses, and other properties across the state.

This order came after heavy rain fell for days, leading to flooding in many parts of Osun. Osogbo, the state capital, is one of the areas hit hardest.

Reports say about 1,000 households have been affected by the floods, forcing many people to look for other places to stay. Ijetu, Isale Osun, and Oke Osun in Osogbo are among the worst-hit areas. Many homes, hotels, schools, and shops are underwater.

Speaking on X, Mr Adeleke expressed worry about how the flooding affects the homes, businesses, and livelihoods of residents. He said he had instructed the Special Task Force on Environmental Sanitation, led by Elder Aina, to visit the affected places. They are to look into the environmental factors causing the flooding and make a response plan.

“My administration has already started dredging and improving drainage to help water flow better and reduce flooding. We will take more steps to protect lives, property, and communities,” Mr Adeleke said.

The governor noted that the state has seen a lot of rain in recent weeks. This has put more strain on drainage systems and waterways. He also called on residents to help by keeping their areas clean and avoiding actions that block water flow.

Mr Adeleke specifically asked people to stop throwing waste into waterways and roadside drains. He urged them not to build on natural water paths and areas prone to flooding. He also requested that residents report flooding, blocked drains, and other environmental problems to the right authorities.

The governor pointed out that government actions alone won’t be enough to tackle flooding if people continue to block waterways with their activities.
