Organisers of the Ajayi Elebire Elite Basketball Camp are looking for more scholarship chances for young players. The fifth edition of this yearly program will kick off later this month.
Olalekan Ajayi, who started the camp and is a former international basketball player, mentioned that foreign coaches will join the selection process. The aim is to find talented players from Lagos and nearby states.
The camp will start with a screening exercise in Lagos on Monday, 19 October. After that, selected players and the coaching crew will head to Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, the next day.
Training will take place from 21 to 23 October and will end with an All-Stars game.
Mr Ajayi said they hope to improve on last year's edition, which gave scholarships to 10 players. “Last edition, we gave out scholarships to 10 players, and we are waiting for the coaches to arrive and see how many will be making it this time around,” he said.
He is confident that this fifth edition will be better than the previous ones. He pointed out that the involvement of foreign coaches in the screening and training would make a difference. “I can bet you that we are going to be having a bigger and better camping this time around,” he said.
“The foreign coaches are going to be arriving in Nigeria on Monday and will head straight to the Lagos screening to select the best players from Lagos and other states within the vicinity before proceeding to Ado-Ekiti.”
The camp honors Mr Ajayi’s late father, Babatunde Elebire Ajayi. This year, it returns to Ado-Ekiti for the second time in a row.
Participants are set to leave on 24 October, a day after the training ends. The fifth edition continues the effort to help young basketball players grow and gives promising participants a chance to advance their education and sports careers.
