The Anambra State Government has enrolled 10,384 people living with HIV in the state’s health insurance scheme. This move aims to improve access to affordable and quality HIV healthcare services across the state.
Nkem Okeke, who is the executive director and project manager of the Anambra State AIDS Control Agency, announced this at a stakeholders’ meeting on Wednesday in Awka.
Dr Okeke said the meeting looked at how well HIV services are integrated into the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency. The goal is to improve healthcare access and ensure that treatment for beneficiaries continues without interruption.
He highlighted that this achievement shows the state government’s commitment to providing affordable and quality healthcare for people living with HIV. It also aims to improve long-term health outcomes and support for these individuals.
Dr Okeke mentioned that Anambra is now one of the leading states in Nigeria for integrating HIV services into health insurance programs. This helps ensure wider access and sustainability of these services.
The stakeholders’ meeting focused on reviewing progress, improving teamwork, and developing strategies to expand access to HIV services through the state’s health insurance scheme.
“We looked at how well we are implementing HIV services in the state’s health insurance scheme. We shared our experiences and found practical ways to improve service delivery,” he said.
He added, “We also talked about ways to strengthen implementation and increase enrolment to keep the progress we have made.”
Dr Okeke praised the state's progress. He called the initiative a major step toward ensuring that sustainable HIV care and healthcare services reach vulnerable populations in Anambra.
He urged ongoing teamwork among government agencies, development partners, and stakeholders. This collaboration is needed to build on the achievements and expand access to HIV services for more people in communities.
He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to making sure that no one living with HIV in the state misses out on quality healthcare services.
Dr Okeke stressed the need for regular HIV testing, early diagnosis, and prompt treatment. He also called for continuous efforts to fight stigma and discrimination related to the disease in the state.
He believes these steps are crucial to ending the HIV epidemic in Anambra. They will improve treatment outcomes and help those affected live healthy and productive lives.
