Canadian writer Anne Carson has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. The Nobel Prize announced this on Thursday.

Ms Carson received the prize for her "bold and inventive" work. The Swedish Academy noted that her writing creates new forms of modern literature through its "playful dialogue" with classical literature.

At 76 years old, Ms Carson is known for mixing poetry, translation, and classical studies. She often takes stories from ancient Greek literature and finds new ways to share them with today's readers.

This is not Ms Carson’s first major award. She has also won the Griffin Poetry Prize, the T.S. Eliot Prize, and the MacArthur Fellowship, among other honors.

Ms Carson is the second Canadian to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Alice Munro was the first, winning the award in 2013. Ms Carson is part of a small group of writers who combine poetry, translation, classical studies, and other art forms.

Nobel nominations are kept secret for 50 years. Writers cannot nominate themselves for the prize.

Nominations come from eligible individuals. This includes members of the Swedish Academy, university professors, past Nobel winners, and some literary organizations.

Ms Carson was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1950. She studied Classics at the University of Toronto and finished her doctoral thesis, Odi et Amo Ergo Sum, in 1981.

Her academic background has been a big part of her writing. Ms Carson has taught at several universities and worked as a poet, translator, and scholar.

Her love for ancient Greek literature shows up in many of her works. This includes her translations of Sappho’s poems and plays by Sophocles and Euripides.

The Swedish Academy praised Ms Carson for creating new literary forms while using classical traditions. Her writing does not stick to one style.

She has produced poetry, essays, translations, and verse novels. She has also collaborated with theatre, opera, visual artists, and choreographers.

The Academy said her freedom in writing has made her work significant in the global art and literature scene.

One of Ms Carson’s most famous books is Autobiography of Red: A Novel in Verse, published in 1998. This book tells the story of Geryon, a red, winged monster from Greek mythology.

Instead of just retelling the old tale, Ms Carson turns it into a modern story about love, rejection, and coming of age. This book helped her gain recognition as an important modern writer.

In 1986, Ms Carson published Eros the Bittersweet. This book looks at love and desire through the lens of ancient Greek literature.

In 1995, she released Glass, Irony, and God. This book includes The Glass Essay, a long poem that mixes her personal experiences with literary concepts.

She later published Float in 2016. This collection has 22 separate booklets that can be read in any order.

Her upcoming 2024 work, Wrong Norma, also mixes different writing styles.

Ms Carson continues to translate ancient Greek works. This includes writings by Sappho and plays by Sophocles and Euripides.

Much of Ms Carson’s work focuses on words, their origins, and how meanings can change.

The Nobel Committee said she combines "the philologist’s obsession with words" with "the poet’s desire for new meaning."

In simple terms, her work mixes careful language study with the freedom of poetry. This has allowed her to shift between academic writing and creative work throughout her career.

The Nobel Prize in Literature is given each year to a writer whose work is considered important for literature.

Ms Carson’s win adds her name to a list of global writers who have received the award. For Canada, it is another win 13 years after Ms Munro.

For Nigeria, Ms Carson’s win brings back the record of Wole Soyinka, who is still the only Nobel Literature laureate from the country.

The Nobel Committee will officially present Ms Carson with the 2026 Nobel Prize in Stockholm in December.
