The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council has accused Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s candidate for the 2023 presidential election, of not accepting the election results.
On Friday, the council’s spokesman, Dele Alake, who is also the Minister of Solid Minerals, criticized Obi's comments from a recent interview with BBC Africa. He said that Obi's claim of winning the election goes against official records.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, insisted last week in the BBC Africa interview that he won the presidential election. He did admit that he does not have proof to back it up.
In response, the APC Presidential Campaign Council said that President Bola Tinubu’s win was confirmed by the Independent National Electoral Commission, the election tribunal, and the Supreme Court.
The statement said, “Mr. Peter Obi continues to show a troubling lack of character, honesty, and dignity. One would expect his latest nonsense to come from overexcited supporters rather than a presidential candidate who should know better. Maybe the leader and his followers are just two sides of the same bad coin.
“Nothing is more frustrating than Obi’s recent claim that he won the 2023 presidential election while also admitting he has no evidence to support it.
“By Obi’s reasoning, it is okay to make bold claims without any proof. For him, it is fine to make allegations without evidence or to act without thinking by sharing unproven ideas.
“This is very concerning. There seems to be no end to Obi’s acting and tricks.”
The APC PCC criticized Obi for saying he won the 2023 presidential election even though he finished third and has not provided evidence for his claims.
The council said Obi’s behavior shows a lack of respect for the truth, adding that his tendency to exaggerate is not suitable for someone running for president.
It stated, “Where is Obi getting his facts from? Is it from his well-known adviser at Upper Iweka Junction or from some Obedient person typing away on a laptop from California or Dallas?
“To restate the clearly obvious, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu won the 2023 election convincingly. There is no doubt about it. The Independent National Electoral Commission confirmed his victory. The election tribunal and the highest court in the country also affirmed it.
“President Tinubu has continued to carry out his duties, pushing important reforms that have stabilized the economy, improved infrastructure, supported businesses and young people, enhanced education and healthcare, and created jobs.
“We again urge Peter Obi to act honorably and stick to his earlier promise to step back from the 2027 presidential race if it is shown that his administration left debts in Anambra State, something that the state’s financial records have clearly shown.
