Arsenal, the Premier League champions, have told their staff that they will cut about 60 jobs to save costs. This announcement comes just a week after manager Mikel Arteta signed a new contract that lasts until June 2030, and a few months after the club won their first league title in 22 years.
According to a report from The Athletic on Wednesday, the club informed its workers that 60 positions will be made redundant. The cuts will affect several departments within the club.
“The coaches will be among the departments unaffected, along with the performance backroom teams for the men’s and women’s sides, the academy, the club’s community operation, the Arsenal Foundation, security personnel and workers dedicated to the women’s setup. A consultation is underway and the decision could yet be subject to change,” The Athletic stated.
This job cut plan comes despite Arsenal’s good financial standing. It also follows positive financial results for the 2024-25 season.
In February, the club reported a total loss of just £1.4 million, but they also recorded record revenues of £691 million, based on accounts submitted to Companies House.
The biggest increase was in commercial income, which rose from £218.3 million to £263.2 million. This was boosted by the naming-rights deal for the training ground with Sobha Realty.
On the field, Arteta led Arsenal to the Premier League title last season, ending a wait of 22 years. Arsenal also made it to the Champions League final, where they lost to Paris Saint-Germain in a penalty shootout.
The club announced Arteta’s new contract on October 7. His deal runs until 2030 and is believed to make him the highest-paid coach in the Premier League.
These job cuts will be the second wave of job losses since Kroenke Sports & Entertainment took full control of Arsenal. In August 2020, the club proposed 55 redundancies, citing the financial effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The current job cuts are part of a wider review of the club’s operations after a successful time on the pitch and better financial results off it.
