César Azpilicueta, the former Chelsea defender, has shared how much Chelsea impacted his career. He said the club’s tough culture helped him grow as a player and a leader, as he told BBC Sport on Sunday.
Azpilicueta joined Chelsea from Marseille in 2012 for about £7 million. He came to the club without being a big star.
But through hard work and being consistent, he became one of the most trusted players at Chelsea.
He started as a right winger before moving to defensive roles. He played as a left-back, wing-back, and centre-back.
At Chelsea, he had to adjust to different managers and tactics while playing alongside established stars like John Terry, Frank Lampard, and Petr Cech.
“I had to find my way,” Azpilicueta said. “It was about consistency. I had to work hard to stay fit, adapt to different managers and different positions.”
He added that Chelsea’s drive for success pushed him to get better during his 11 years at the club.
“When you arrive at Chelsea, you feel the ambition straight away. Every three days you have to win. Every game and every trophy matters,” he said.
“That culture pushed me to the maximum and, especially when I left Chelsea, I felt that I had given everything I had for the club.”
Azpilicueta took over as Chelsea captain after Terry and Gary Cahill. He reached the peak of his career in 2021 when he led Chelsea to Champions League victory against Manchester City.
His growth was not just on the field. Azpilicueta valued education during his playing days. He completed business studies and later got more qualifications in football management and leadership.
He believes studying outside football made him a better leader. It also gave him the confidence to represent fellow Premier League players during the COVID-19 pandemic.
After leaving Chelsea in 2023, he played his last season at Sevilla before retiring from professional football.
Even though he has been mentioned for a role in football administration, he says he is currently enjoying life with his family.
Despite leaving Stamford Bridge, his bond with Chelsea is still strong.
“I left Chelsea, but Chelsea will always stay in my heart,” he said. “I follow every game and I hope the club comes back to where it belongs.”
Azpilicueta thinks the current players and manager at Chelsea can bring the club back to its former glory. He believes that the expectations at Stamford Bridge should remain high.
“At a big club like Chelsea, the demands are high. But I think that’s normal. It should be demanding and ambitious because, speaking as a Chelsea fan, you always want to see the club winning trophies.”
For a player who came in as a low-key signing and left as a Champions League-winning captain, Azpilicueta’s journey at Chelsea is all about adaptability, discipline, and a strong desire to improve.
