The Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo Ewuare II, has told traditionalists in Edo South to use "spiritual warfare" and lay curses on those involved in banditry and other violent crimes.

Oba Ewuare gave this order on Tuesday during a meeting with native doctors, priests, and priestesses at his palace in Benin.

The News Agency of Nigeria reminds us that the Edo State Government also plans to set up special courts for armed robbery, kidnapping, and ritual practices. This is to speed up punishment for criminals and discourage others from committing such crimes.

The Oba explained that this direction came from God Almighty and his royal ancestors because of the growing insecurity in Nigeria.

He stressed that the traditional institution must support the government's efforts to tackle this problem. He asked traditionalists to start a week-long spiritual exercise to pray for peace in the land.

This exercise will end at 6 a.m. on Thursday, 2 July at the Oba’s Palace, where curses will be placed on wrongdoers and their supporters.

“The message is from the ancestors. Edo people, both at home and abroad, should hear this.

“The criminals know that God Almighty and our ancestors will not allow their evil to thrive in Edo,” Oba Ewuare said.

He added that past Obas of Benin would not accept the desires of criminals, stressing that it is time for them to stop their actions.

While speaking to the groups, Osaigbovo Osamwonyi, the Akenuwa of Benin, supported Oba Ewuare’s statement. He urged them to stay alert during their various traditional rites.

Mr Osamwonyi mentioned that the Benin Palace has increased its spiritual consultations and coordination on this matter.
