Three sisters died on Saturday afternoon when a boat capsized at Tiga Dam in Kano State.

The sisters were named Murjanatu, Atika, and Bilkisu. They were from Yalwan Rugu-Rugu village in the Tudunwada Local Government Area.

Sa’adatu Salisu, the local government chairperson, shared this sad news. She said the accident happened around 2 p.m.

Mrs Salisu extended her condolences to the family and the community. She prayed for Allah to give the deceased eternal rest and strength to their loved ones.

Inland water transport is very important for rural communities in Kano. This is especially true in areas where agriculture thrives, near rivers and dams like Tiga and Thomas.

Farmers, traders, and school children depend on small boats for their daily trips to markets, schools, and farms.

But this transport system has many problems, with accidents happening often due to overloading.

Boats usually carry too many passengers and cargo to make more money on each trip, ignoring safety.

Passengers rarely get standard life jackets, which puts their lives at serious risk if the boat capsizes.

Agencies like the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and local emergency response teams are responsible for safety in water transport. But there are still big gaps that need attention.
