Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have burned down a block with five classrooms and a staff office at Government Day Secondary School in Kautikari Village, located in Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State.

The incident happened around 6:45 p.m. on Saturday, according to reports from PUNCH Metro.

Malah Kyari, the Education Secretary of Chibok Local Government Area, confirmed the attack to PUNCH Metro on Sunday. He said the fire affected the junior secondary school section.

β€œI can confirm that the insurgents attacked the Kautikari community yesterday, killed one person, and set ablaze one block containing five classrooms and an office at Kautikari JSS,” he stated.

The Public Relations Officer for the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, also confirmed the attack. He mentioned that security forces were able to repel the terrorists.

β€œThey attacked Kautikari village, where they burnt two classrooms at Government Day Secondary School and killed one person, a man,” he said.

β€œThe suspected insurgents faced strong resistance from joint security forces, averting further losses. As of now, the area is calm, and intensive patrols are ongoing.”

Samaila Manza, the Zonal Inspector for Local Government and Emirate Affairs overseeing Bama, Chibok, Gwoza, Askira/Uba, and Damboa, also confirmed the incident. He said that details were still not clear.

β€œI was informed that terrorists attacked the village, but we have not verified the actual extent of the damage they caused,” he told PUNCH Metro.

Local sources, who asked to remain anonymous due to the sensitive nature of the event, reported that the terrorists came in large numbers, aiming to destroy the school and its facilities.

β€œI learnt that they entered Kautikari on motorcycles. Many residents have fled for safety. They targeted the school and set it on fire. It was during their entry into the community that a man was killed,” one source said.
