Bursaspor head coach Mustafa Er has shared that the Turkish club had tough competition from several teams, including Scottish champions Celtic, before they signed Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho during the summer transfer window.

The Nigerian forward has quickly shown why Bursaspor wanted him. He has been scoring freely in Turkey's second division since he joined as a free agent in July 2026.

Iheanacho came to Bursaspor after talks with Celtic fell apart. He chose not to stay with the Scottish team, even after helping them win a domestic title in the 2025/26 season.

The former Manchester City and Leicester City striker scored nine goals in 24 matches for Celtic after joining them in September 2025. The two sides agreed to a new deal, but the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup Golden Ball winner decided to seek a new challenge in Turkey.

His choice is already paying off. Iheanacho has scored 11 goals in eight consecutive matches, making him one of the top players in the Turkish second division.

Bursaspor manager Er has praised Iheanacho's start. He recognized the effort that went into bringing the experienced striker to the club. He also pointed out that Bursaspor’s reputation played a big role in winning the race for him.

While speaking to reporters at the Özlüce İbrahim Yazıcı Facilities over the weekend, Er shared his hope that Iheanacho would keep scoring in the next match. He also praised the growing bond and productivity within his team.

“Iheanacho continues to score. I hope he scores this week too. We have a positive team,” Er said.

“There is tremendous progress in team spirit. Productivity is also increasing. People are more productive when they are happy; we win as a team.

“We brought in Iheanacho so that he would score goals. We worked very hard for that transfer. We also need to thank our management.

“There was a lot of demand for him. The club’s size was also a key factor in choosing us. We are getting the contribution we want.”

Bursaspor’s successful effort to sign Iheanacho shows the club's serious intentions. They are benefiting from the striker’s experience and goal-scoring skills as they aim to meet their goals.

Apart from his club success, the 30-year-old also made a mark with the Super Eagles. Iheanacho scored first in Nigeria’s exciting 3-3 draw against Russia on 6 October, showing his sharpness in front of goal and keeping up his form on the international stage.

With his goals coming for both club and country, Iheanacho is making a strong case for himself as he aims to keep his good form in Turkey and strengthen his role in Nigeria’s attacking options.
