Amad Diallo came off the bench to score a last-minute winner as Côte d’Ivoire grabbed Africa’s first victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. They beat Ecuador 1-0 on Sunday.
After South Africa lost 2-0 to Mexico and Morocco held Brazil to a 1-1 draw, the Elephants carried Africa's hopes for a win in the tournament.
The breakthrough happened in the 90th minute when Diallo, who plays for Manchester United, scored from inside the penalty area. He finished after a strong run and assist from Wilfried Singo.
This goal capped a tightly contested match in Philadelphia. Both teams hit the woodwork and had several chances to score.
Ecuador came close in the first half with John Yeboah and Nilson Angulo, who both hit the crossbar.
Côte d’Ivoire responded after halftime. Elye Wahi’s shot also hit the woodwork, thanks to the great work from the active Yan Diomande.
Diallo’s entry in the 56th minute added energy to the Ivorians’ attack. His winning goal ended Ecuador’s unbeaten streak of 19 matches, which lasted since September 2024.
Goalkeeper Yahia Fofana was also key in this win. He made an important save to stop Gonzalo Plata midway through the second half while Ecuador pushed for a goal.
This victory marks Côte d’Ivoire's return to winning at the World Cup since their last appearance in 2014. It also raises their hopes of reaching the knockout stage for the first time in history.
Next, the Ivorians face a tough challenge against Germany, who earlier thrashed Curacao 7-1 to top Group E. Ecuador will look to bounce back against Curacao.
With Morocco drawing with Brazil and Côte d’Ivoire winning against Ecuador, Africa's teams have had a mixed start. But the Elephants have secured the continent’s first World Cup win.
