CAN warns politicians not to misuse Jesus Christ's name for politics

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has warned politicians and their supporters not to use the name of Jesus Christ to push their political agendas ahead of the 2027 elections.

The President of CAN, Daniel Okoh, who is also an archbishop, gave this warning in a press statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

Mr Okoh shared his worries about recent political comments that mention Christ. He specifically pointed to remarks by Precious Oruche, known as Mama Pee, about Peter Obi and the upcoming elections.

While he acknowledged the passionate nature of political discussions, the CAN President stressed that the name of Jesus Christ is holy and should not be involved in political fights.

"Jesus Christ is not a political candidate, a campaign slogan, or a weapon to advance one politician against another."

"His name is sacred and should not be dragged into partisan contests in ways that elevate human beings, however popular or admired, to a place that belongs to God alone," he said.

The cleric made it clear that citizens can support or criticize any political figure, including Mr Obi, Atiku Abubakar, or President Bola Tinubu. But he warned against being too partisan.

"Our political loyalty must never become so intense that we begin to speak of politicians in terms that diminish the reverence due to Christ."

"Let us argue about competence, character, policies, performance, and the future of Nigeria. Let us disagree passionately if necessary, but let us leave Jesus Christ out of our partisan quarrels."

He emphasized that no candidate or political party can offer spiritual salvation or the ultimate solution to human needs.

"No politician is the Messiah. No political party represents the salvation of the human spirit that Christ epitomizes. And no electoral victory is worth compromising the honour due to His name," he added.

Mr Okoh called on political actors, campaign teams, and the electorate to show restraint, responsibility, and mutual respect as the preparations for the next general elections pick up speed.
