Super Eagles defender Emmanuel Fernandez has become one of the hottest Nigerian players in this summer’s transfer market. Premier League teams Chelsea and Arsenal are watching his situation at Rangers closely, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Fernandez joined Rangers from Peterborough United last summer for €2.9 million. He has quickly become one of the top defenders in the Scottish Premiership.
At 24 years old, he played a big part in Rangers finishing third last season. He scored five goals in 33 matches across all competitions. His solid performances in defense have impressed many.
He even won the club’s Player of The Season award.
TEAMtalk reports that Chelsea and Arsenal still want the Nigerian center-back. But they are facing competition from several clubs in Europe.
Other teams interested include Belgian champions Club Brugge, Dutch teams Feyenoord and Ajax, Premier League clubs West Ham United and Everton, and the German club Borussia Dortmund. All of them are keeping an eye on the defender.
Fernandez’s growing fame has also caught the eye of Bundesliga teams. TEAMtalk and Transfermarkt say Bayer Leverkusen have joined the race for him and are seen as the leading club to sign the Rangers star.
He is known for his aerial skills, physical strength, and ability to score important goals from defense. These traits have increased his market value a lot in the past year.
The main issue for any transfer is Rangers’ price tag for him. Transfermarkt values Fernandez at €18 million, but reports say Rangers want at least €28 million before they will consider any offers.
With interest rising from some of Europe’s top clubs, Fernandez might be on the verge of a big move just one year after joining Ibrox.
