Negotiations between Chelsea and Manchester City about hiring Enzo Maresca as Pep Guardiola's replacement have hit a snag over money.

Guardiola announced on May 22 that he would leave his position at City after ten successful years. This made City look at Maresca as the top choice to take over at the Etihad Stadium.

But talks between the two clubs have turned complicated. Chelsea says they deserve a compensation fee for Maresca. He just left Stamford Bridge a few months ago and was still under contract until 2029.

According to BBC Sport on Monday, Chelsea insists that the way Maresca left means they need to agree on a financial settlement before any deal can go through. They are checking their legal options while discussions are ongoing.

A source from Chelsea mentioned that the club's position is strong. They said Maresca’s contract means "there is an obligation for compensation to be agreed before any appointment can proceed."

City wants to wrap up an agreement quickly. They are getting ready for a new manager after Guardiola’s announcement. But the talks are moving slowly because of disagreements on how much to pay and when.

Maresca worked as Guardiola's assistant during City’s successful Treble-winning season in 2022, 23. He is reportedly interested in going back to the club, where he also had a coaching role before moving up to senior management.

He later managed Leicester City, helping them get promoted to the Premier League. He also had a stint at Chelsea, winning the Club World Cup and the UEFA Conference League.

While both clubs are still talking, it is unclear when a new appointment might happen. The compensation issue is now the main thing holding up progress.
