The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has taken a couple, Olorunbukunmi Taiwo and his wife, Awolegan Omolola Omotola, to court in Ado-Ekiti. They face charges linked to a N1.09bn contract scam.

The Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission presented the case to Justice Abubakar Usman. They face six charges related to obtaining money through false pretenses and keeping proceeds from crime.

In a post on its X handle on Monday, the commission shared details from the charge sheet. It says the couple worked together to defraud a widow named Anazia Kenechukwu. She reported them after a supposed road contract deal went bad.

The petition claims, “the first defendant approached the complainant to finance a road construction contract purportedly awarded to him by the Delta State Oil Producing Area Development Commission.”

The document also states that “a total sum of N1,980,000,000.00 was paid into the first defendant’s account domiciled with Access Bank Plc.” This payment followed their alleged agreement.

Investigators informed the court that the money was reportedly misused to buy properties in Ado-Ekiti. This included a lounge and a four-bedroom bungalow.

The EFCC mentioned that it has obtained an interim order to seize the properties, which are thought to be linked to the alleged crime.

Despite the charges, the couple pleaded not guilty in court. The court has now adjourned for further hearing.
