The Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has ordered a former banker, Chukwuebuka Nweke, to pay N1 million for illegally accessing a computer. This action led to the withdrawal of the same amount from a customer’s bank account.
A statement from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) spokesperson Dele Oyewale on Tuesday revealed that Judge Ismail Ijelu convicted Mr Nweke on Monday. This followed a trial where the prosecution presented five witnesses and the defence called one.
The EFCC stated that Mr Nweke accessed a desktop computer assigned to Emmanuella Anyanwu without permission on 21 June 2025. This allowed him to withdraw N1 million from an account owned by Leelee Dumbari without authorization.
The EFCC’s Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 handled the prosecution of Mr Nweke on one count of illegal withdrawal. He pleaded not guilty to the charges under Section 386(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
In his judgement, Judge Ijelu ordered Mr Nweke to pay the N1 million fine within 30 days. If he fails to do so, he will be sent to a correctional centre for six months.
