Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has thrown his weight behind Kylian Mbappé for the Ballon d’Or. He believes no player has had a better individual performance than the French star this year.
Courtois spoke to DAZN on Wednesday. He mentioned that Mbappé's lack of major trophies might hurt his chances for the award.
“Individually, no player was better than him this year, but sadly, we didn’t win any trophies,” Courtois said.
The Belgian goalkeeper also pointed out the achievements of Barcelona's young player Lamine Yamal. He noted that Yamal's success in winning trophies could boost his chances for the award.
“Lamine Yamal had a worse World Cup than Mbappé, but he won the title and won the league,” he added.
Courtois’ comments show the ongoing discussion about what matters more: individual performance or team success in picking the Ballon d’Or winner.
Mbappé has made a name for himself as one of the top players in the world. Meanwhile, Yamal is also getting noticed for his performances with Barcelona and the Spanish national team.
The Ballon d’Or is given to the best individual football player each year. Achievements, performances, and overall impact are key factors in deciding who gets the award.
