Ex-Man United player Memphis Depay has accused Corinthians of going back on their word to extend his contract. The Brazilian club chose not to renew his deal due to financial issues.

Depay, who joined Corinthians in 2024, says that a new two-year contract was already agreed upon by the club’s president and its sporting, legal, and financial teams before they changed their minds.

"Very disappointed to read that Corinthians decided not to honour our agreement in place to extend my contract for 2 more years," Depay wrote on social media on Wednesday.

He claimed that the renewal was clearly approved by the club’s leaders and key departments. He accused some unnamed people of breaking their promise.

"I didn’t want this situation and always respected the club throughout the process, but now I am forced to react strongly in order to preserve my interests," the 32-year-old stated.

Depay also hinted that he would speak out publicly about the issue soon. "In the upcoming days I will speak publicly but rest assured that I will not leave this unacceptable behaviour unsanctioned," he said.

Corinthians confirmed they would not renew Depay’s contract. They explained that the decision was due to the club’s financial situation. The club said they cannot take on another big commitment to keep the forward without harming their financial balance.

The Brazilian team also thanked Depay for his time with them over the two years. He played 79 matches and scored 20 goals, helping Corinthians win the Copa do Brasil in 2025 and the Supercopa do Brasil in 2026.

Corinthians announced that their president, Osmar Stabile, will hold a press conference soon to explain the decision in more detail.

This issue now puts Depay and Corinthians in a tricky spot as the forward plans to take action to protect his interests.
