The Bayelsa State Government has set up a five-member interim board to manage Bayelsa United FC for the next six months. This follows the club's relegation from the Nigeria Premier Football League.
Governor Douye Diri dissolved the club’s board two weeks ago during a meeting of the State Executive Council at the Government House in Yenagoa. This decision came after Bayelsa United was relegated at the end of the 2025/2026 NPFL season.
The Deputy Governor, Dr Peter Akpe, announced the new interim board on Thursday. He made the announcement during the weekly Prosperity Walk at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa.
Akpe said the board's main job is to help the club return to the NPFL within six months. He stressed that Bayelsa United should not stay in the second division for too long.
“The task is to bring Bayelsa United out of relegation and back to the Premiership, which is the rightful position of the club,” he stated.
The interim board includes experienced football administrator Dr Peter Singabele, former Director of Sports Sir Braveman Wodi, Director-General of the Prosperity Cup, Ono Akpe, and Godson Ekarde. Ken Ekpolaemi Odogu will act as the secretary.
“Dr Peter Singabele, Braveman Wodi, Godson Ekarde, Ono Akpe and Ken Ekpolaemi Odogu have six months to return the team to the top division,” Akpe added.
The deputy governor also urged football stakeholders in the state to back the interim board. He wants everyone to help ensure the government-owned club gets back to the Nigeria Premier Football League quickly.
