The police in Edo State have announced a movement restriction across the state. This will be from midnight to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. The aim is to ensure security during the local government elections.

Eno Ikoedem, the police spokesperson in Edo, shared this news in a statement on Friday in Benin. She explained that the restriction is part of security plans made with other agencies to keep the election process safe and orderly.

According to her, the restriction is meant to protect voters, election officials, and important materials. It is also to prevent any issues that could disturb the elections.

Ms Ikoedem, who is an assistant superintendent of police, stated that all movement, both vehicles and people, will not be allowed during this time. However, officials from the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC), accredited observers, media personnel, security agencies, emergency responders, and other essential workers will still be able to move around.

She urged residents to follow the directive closely. She mentioned that security personnel have been placed across the state’s 18 local government areas (LGAs) to enforce the restriction.

“Anyone found breaking these rules or doing anything that might disrupt the elections will face legal action,” she said.

Ms Ikoedem also quoted the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, who assured residents that there are enough security measures to protect the election process. He encouraged eligible voters to come out peacefully and fulfill their civic duties according to the election guidelines.

She noted that Mr Agbonika reaffirmed the police command's commitment to a free, fair, and credible local government election. The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the Election Commission has given approval for 12 political parties to take part in the elections across the 18 local government areas in the state.
