A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, Matthew Uwuigbe, has died after reportedly collapsing in a hotel room with a 21-year-old sex worker.
Mr Uwuigbe died on Sunday at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, which is in the Esan West Local Government Area of the state.
Edo police are looking into the details of his death and have arrested three people linked to the case.
The police spokesperson in Edo, Eno Ikoedem, shared this news with reporters on Tuesday.
Ms Ikoedem said the police got a report around 8 p.m. on October 5 that Mr Uwuigbe had checked into the hotel and had hired the woman named Angela Jacob.
She explained that the lecturer later asked Ms Jacob to go buy water for him.
“When she returned, she found him lying dead in the room,” the police spokesperson stated.
According to her, the hotel owner, the manager, and the sex worker have all been arrested and are helping the police with their investigation.
She noted that Mr Uwuigbe’s body has been taken to the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.
The police have not revealed the cause of death and have not said that the sexual encounter led to the lecturer’s death.
The university’s spokesperson, Mike Aladenika, confirmed that Mr Uwuigbe worked at AAU but emphasized that the incident took place off campus.
“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened is his private life,” Mr Aladenika told PM News.
He also clarified that the woman involved is not a student of the university.
“The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” he added.
