The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Benin has convicted 10 people for misusing the naira in different cases at the Federal High Court in Delta and Edo states.

The EFCC shared this news in a statement on its Facebook page on Monday.

The convicts are Lucky Onoberhie, Happy Isioma, Friday Ehiedu, Collins Albert, Okorie Builder, Ernest Achieme, Isicheli Chijioke, Nwosu Davison, Enadegh Agbonmware, and Lucky Osaro.

The agency said these people were taken to court for spraying naira notes at parties, which breaks Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007.

One charge against Mr Achieme stated that he sprayed N50,000 in N200 notes while dancing at a wedding in Kwale, Delta State, on December 31, 2025.

The EFCC said all the accused admitted to the charges when they were read, and then the prosecution lawyer, K. W. Chukwuma-Eneh, asked the courts to convict them.

Justice F. A. Olubanjo of the Federal High Court in Asaba found Messrs Onoberhie, Isioma, Ehiedu, Albert, Builder, Achieme, Chijioke, and Davison guilty. He sentenced each to 12 months in prison or a N100,000 fine.

In a separate ruling, Justice C. A. Obiozor of the Federal High Court in Benin City sentenced Mr Agbonmware to six months in jail or a N100,000 fine after finding him guilty of the same crime.

The judge also convicted Mr Osaro for a similar offence and gave him the same sentence of six months in prison or a N100,000 fine.

The EFCC stated that all the convicts signed agreements to behave well in the future.

The agency added that these individuals were arrested and charged for misusing the naira against the laws that forbid such actions.
