Enyimba got their first win of the Nigeria Premier Football League season in style, beating Shooting Stars 4-2. Meanwhile, Sporting Lagos and Ikorodu City played to a goalless draw in their rescheduled Lagos derby on Wednesday.
The People’s Elephant showed strong attacking skills at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba. They secured all three points, while the two Lagos teams ended up sharing the spoils at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan.
In Aba, Enyimba started strong right from the beginning. Richard Ezinna scored the first goal in the seventh minute.
The home team kept pushing forward, and their hard work paid off. Damian Chibueze scored the second goal in the 29th minute, doubling their lead.
Shooting Stars had a tough time dealing with Enyimba’s attack. The hosts took advantage of their chances and aimed to put the game out of reach for the visitors.
The pressure increased, and Idris Abubakar added a third goal in the 36th minute. This left Enyimba in a strong position before halftime.
After the break, Enyimba wasted no time adding to their score. Ifeanyi Ihemekwele found the net just four minutes into the second half, making it 4-0.
Shooting Stars did not give up and fought back late in the game. Mustapha Adams Agba’a scored to cut the deficit in the 76th minute. Johnmark Aule then added another goal in the 91st minute, bringing the score to 4-2.
But the visitors’ late goals were not enough to stop Enyimba from winning. The home team held on to celebrate their first victory of the season.
This win will give Enyimba a big boost as they aim to keep up the momentum in the league.
On the other hand, Sporting Lagos and Ikorodu City could not find the net in their derby at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.
The match, which was postponed earlier, ended in a 0-0 draw. Neither team could score in their fight for local pride.
Both teams played carefully, and the battle for midfield control limited chances for attack early on.
Sporting Lagos tried to control the game with steady play and attacks down the sides. But Ikorodu City’s defense stayed strong, blocking their shots at goal.
Ikorodu City also aimed to score on counter-attacks, but Sporting Lagos defended well to keep them from scoring.
In the second half, both teams looked for the winning goal. Coaches made changes to bring fresh energy to the game. But still, neither team could break the deadlock.
The draw meant both clubs had to settle for one point each, missing the chance to claim bragging rights in the Lagos derby.
While Enyimba celebrated a thrilling four-goal victory, Sporting Lagos and Ikorodu City were left to think about a tough match that ended without goals.
The two matches had different outcomes, with Enyimba taking all three points in Aba and the Lagos rivals sharing the points in Onikan.
