Nigeria Volleyball Federation President, Engineer Musa Nimrod, believes the future of beach volleyball in Nigeria is bright after the women’s national team won the 2026 African U18 Beach Volleyball Development Cup in Senegal. This news was reported by PUNCH Sports Extra.
Nimrod called the victory a good sign for the sport's future. He emphasized the need for ongoing investment in youth competitions to create stronger senior teams.
“The future of beach volleyball in Nigeria is very bright. We will continue to focus on underage competitions because that is how we can build stronger senior women’s teams for the future,” he said.
On Thursday, Nigeria’s women’s team beat hosts Senegal A with a score of 2-0 (21-8, 21-10) to win the title.
Joy Lawrence and Ifechukwu Odoh from Nigeria started strong, winning the first set easily at 21-8.
Senegal A tried to come back in the second set, but Lawrence and Odoh kept their cool and finished with a 21-10 win.
This victory capped off a strong campaign for the Nigerian duo and showed the country's growing potential in beach volleyball.
Nigeria's coach John Iwerima praised the players for their determination and fighting spirit during the tournament.
“The players showed great resilience and determination throughout the competition. This victory is a clear indication that Nigeria has one of the best developmental programmes in Africa,” Iwerima said.
He also thanked the NVBF for supporting the team’s participation in the competition.
Iwerima mentioned that the experience gained from this tournament will be important for the young players as they continue to develop.
