The 2026 Zenith Bank Team Tennis Tournament started on Monday at the tennis courts of Ikoyi Club 1938. There were many exciting matches with impressive results.
The competition is held in a best-of-nine format during the group stage. From the semi-final stage, the format will change to best-of-three sets.
Players are grouped by their banks. These groups include Diaspora Banking, Prestige Banking, Scan to Pay, and Zenith Easy Banking, among others.
One highlight from the first day was when Akeem Mustafa, a former tennis section chairman from the Zenith Aspire Group, beat the current section chairman, Victor Onyenkpa, 6-3 in a thrilling match.
In the Zenith Aspire Group, Azubuike Okonkwo won against Hilary Eledu of Zenith Easy Banking. Kalada Kienka from Diaspora Banking also had a strong performance, winning 9-0 against Emeka Azinge from the Prestige Banking Red Group.
In the Blue Group, Pascal Ebhohimen narrowly defeated Uzor Nwankwo 5-4 in a hard-fought match. Thomas Ighodalo also had a convincing win, beating Jide Ntephe 8-1.
Onyenkpa was pleased with the first day and looks forward to more exciting matches as the tournament goes on.
“I am impressed with the events on the opening day and I am optimistic that the competition will get better in the days ahead,” Onyenkpa said.
The tournament will keep going at Ikoyi Club 1938, where players will compete for spots in the knockout stages.
