Fire destroys shops and offices in Kano market

A fire on Thursday night caused serious damage to properties along Murtala Mohammed Way in the Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State. The fire destroyed several offices and shops in the area.

The blaze started near First City Monument Bank, from a salvage yard known as the Takumbo Market. The flames quickly spread to nearby buildings.

This information came from a statement released on Friday by the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi.

The Fire Service got a distress call at about 10:54 p.m. from one of its personnel, HFS Ibrahim Sabo, who reported the fire. Firefighters from the Service Headquarters and other nearby fire stations rushed to the scene to put out the fire.

When they arrived, firefighters found a one-storey building and nearby commercial structures, measuring about 300 by 200 feet, engulfed in flames.

Initial investigations showed the fire started in the salvage yard, where a lot of goods and property were lost before it spread to other buildings.

The fire affected the upper floor of the Kanawa Building, destroying two offices, two parlours, two toilets, and a kitchen. It also damaged two stores on the ground floor of TUSRAYS Nigeria Limited.

The Fire Service said the cause of the fire was an electrical spark.

Alhaji Sani Anas, the Director of the Kano State Fire Service, urged residents and business owners to follow safety measures to avoid fire disasters.

"Members of the public should take all necessary precautions to prevent fire outbreaks. Electrical installations should be properly maintained and safety measures strictly observed," he said.

Anas also advised residents to report any fire incidents to the nearest fire station quickly. This helps emergency responders act fast before things get worse.

"We appeal to the public to immediately alert the Fire Service whenever there is a fire outbreak. Early reporting helps to minimize damage and save lives and property," he added.

As of the time of this report, there were no casualties from the incident.
