The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported that five people died in a crash involving multiple vehicles at the Ugwu-Onyeama area of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway on Thursday.

The FRSC Route Commander, Theophilus Okoduwa, who is also the Public Enlightenment Officer for the Enugu State Sector Command, shared details of the incident with the News Agency of Nigeria in Enugu.

Okoduwa explained that the crash involved a trailer, a commercial bus, and a car. It took place near the LNG plant in Ugwu-Onyeama.

He stated that the accident happened around 3:18 p.m. and involved 25 people. This included 13 males and 12 females.

According to him, 18 people were injured in the crash. This included seven males and 11 females.

He confirmed that four males and one female lost their lives due to the crash.

Okoduwa mentioned that the vehicles involved were a Dongfeng trailer, a Mitsubishi L300 commercial bus, and a Honda car.

"Within nine minutes of reporting the incident to the FRSC Sector Command at about 3:25 p.m., our officers and marshals, along with patrol vehicles and an ICU ambulance, arrived at the scene."

"The injured victims were taken to nearby Tex Hospital at 9th Mile Corner for immediate medical care. After medical officials confirmed their identities, the bodies of the five deceased were moved to Ekochin Morgue at 9th Mile."

"We have diverted traffic, and efforts are still ongoing to clear the blockage caused by the wreckage of the vehicles involved in the crash," he added.

Okoduwa also noted that early investigations indicated that the crash might have been caused by wrongful overtaking and speeding.
