Flooding Claims Lives in Yobe State

Two people have died after heavy rain caused flooding in parts of Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State.

The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) announced the news in a statement on Tuesday. The victims were identified as Isa Haruna, 38, a security officer known as Mallam Matari, and 18-year-old Abba Kyari.

SEMA reported that both victims drowned in the Pompomari area. This happened after heavy rain on Monday morning caused serious flooding in Malari, Pompomari, and nearby areas.

The agency said its Search and Rescue Team worked with the Yobe State Fire Service. They quickly responded after getting emergency calls from residents in distress.

“Upon receiving distress calls, the Search and Rescue Team of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency, in collaboration with the Yobe State Fire Service, responded promptly to the affected areas. Unfortunately, the victims were found dead,” the statement said.

SEMA added that the bodies of the deceased were taken to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the General Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital in Damaturu.

The agency expressed worry about the ongoing threat of flooding during the rainy season. They urged residents to stay alert, especially those living in low areas that flood easily.

“As the rainy season continues, residents are strongly advised to exercise caution during heavy rainfall. Members of the public should avoid walking, playing or driving through flooded roads, drainage channels and waterways, as floodwaters can be deeper and more dangerous than they appear,” the agency warned.

SEMA also reminded parents and guardians to keep a close eye on their children. They said the current school vacation could put kids at risk near flood areas.

“Parents and guardians should ensure that children are kept away from rivers, streams, culverts and floodwaters, particularly as schools are currently on vacation,” the statement continued.

The agency called on residents to help emergency responders. They should report any flood emergencies or missing persons quickly and take steps to lessen the effects of flooding.

“We urge members of the public to report flood-related emergencies or missing persons without delay, clear blocked drainages where it is safe to do so, pay attention to weather updates and early warning alerts, and move to higher ground whenever flooding occurs,” SEMA advised.
