Former Turkish football referee Ahmet Çakar has backed Victor Osimhen after Galatasaray lost 4-1 to Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League. He blamed Osimhen’s struggles on his recent injury and the lack of help from his teammates, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
“Osimhen, you know, he could play for any team in the world, he’d be the top scorer in the Premier League,” Çakar said on the Libero TV YouTube channel, according to Habersarikirmizi.
“I didn’t see anything like that in this match. I admit, he’s just recovered from injury, but what kind of performance did the team give him that he should play like that?”
Osimhen played the full 90 minutes at Rams Park on Tuesday but had a hard time against Barcelona’s defense. He often found himself offside as Barcelona played a high defensive line.
Fans and critics pointed fingers at him, but Çakar believed the Nigerian striker did not get the support he needed to shine against the Spanish team.
Before his injury, Osimhen had a great start to the season. He scored six goals and provided two assists in four league games for Galatasaray.
After returning from injury, he even set up a goal in Galatasaray’s 3-1 win over Kasimpasa. This raised hopes that he was getting back to his best form before the Champions League match.
Sadly, Osimhen could not make the same impact against Barcelona, and Galatasaray faced a tough loss at home.
