Former Nigerian number one tennis player and Davis Cup star Destiny Ford Da-Silva has announced a new national tennis championship with a total prize money of N30m.

The Destiny Ford Da-Silva Foundation will host the Destiny Da-Silva Tennis Open Championship from November 13 to 21 at the tennis section of the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.

The tournament is set to draw some of Nigeria’s best players from all over the country. It will include men’s and women’s singles and doubles, wheelchair men’s and women’s singles and doubles, and men’s veterans singles.

The champions in the men’s and women’s singles will each take home N1.5m. The rest of the prize money will be shared among the other categories.

The organisers have also shared that each main-draw player will receive a N30,000 subsidy allowance during the championship.

Players need to register through their state tennis associations before the qualifying rounds, which start on Friday, November 13.

The main draw will kick off on Monday, November 16, and the championship will wrap up on November 21.

Including men’s and women’s wheelchair events, as well as the veterans’ category, gives the championship a wide range of competition. Players from different regions will meet in Lagos.

This event adds to Nigeria’s domestic tennis calendar and offers a new competitive platform for players in various categories.
