The Lagos State Police Command has arrested four police officers. This follows the spread of a video that shows them allegedly harassing a young man in the Odogunyan area of Ikorodu.
The command's Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Abimbola Adebisi, shared the news on the command's X account on Friday. She said the officers were identified and called to the office of the Commissioner of Police.
Adebisi explained that the officers belonged to the Immortal Tactical Team in Ikorodu. She mentioned that the command started an investigation right after they received the video. The officers were detained while the investigation and disciplinary actions are in progress.
"As soon as we got the video, we investigated and identified the men as personnel of the Lagos State Police Command attached to the Immortal Tactical Team in Ikorodu," she said.
She added that the officers were called to meet the commissioner, where it was decided to detain them and disband their team. "They gave the verdict that these officers will be detained immediately pending the disciplinary proceedings and also that the entire team be disbanded," Adebisi said.
The police spokesperson confirmed all four officers are in custody, even though only three were available during the briefing. "They are supposed to be four standing here, but the fourth one for some reasons can’t stand here with them, but of course is also in custody," she said.
Adebisi assured the public that the right actions would be taken against the officers. She stressed that the command will not accept misconduct from its personnel. "I want to assure members of the public that we’ll take appropriate actions against them," she said.
She also mentioned that the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh Fatai, has instructed officers to perform their duties with integrity and humility. "And I speak to you, they are presently here at the headquarters for further inquiries," she said.
The spokesperson repeated the command's stance against impunity. She said officers who go against police rules will face the consequences. "And that is because here in Lagos State Command under the leadership of CP Fatai, we say no to impunity," she said.
Adebisi encouraged the public to report police misconduct. She thanked people for helping to identify the officers in the viral video. "I want to urge Lagosians to please always reach out to us whenever you find our officers acting contrary to the directives of the Inspector General of Police," she said.
She also appreciated the community for their support. Adebisi noted that the help from residents allowed the police to identify and apprehend the officers quickly. The officers are still in custody as investigations and disciplinary actions are ongoing.
