The Federal Road Safety Corps has caught suspected members of a phone theft gang and a "one chance" group in Ibadan, Oyo State. They also recovered a stolen mobile phone during their operation.
This information came out in a statement on the official Facebook page of FRSC Nigeria on Tuesday.
The statement, signed by the Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, said the suspects were caught by an FRSC patrol team doing routine checks along the Babalegba, Eleyele, Ojoo road early Monday morning.
Officers became suspicious when they saw a motorcycle chasing a Nissan Micra with registration number AJW 903XE. A female passenger in the car shouted for help, saying her mobile phone had been stolen.
"Acting quickly, the patrol team stopped the car and started asking questions," the statement said.
According to the FRSC, the driver, who goes by the name Idowu Mukaila, said he could help get back the stolen phone.
The Corps also mentioned, "Shortly after, another person showed up and handed over the stolen phone, which raised more doubts about a planned crime operation."
After this incident, the matter was brought to the right authorities, and the suspects were taken for further questioning.
The statement revealed that officials from the Park Management System and Oyo State Drivers’ Union later told the Corps that both the driver and the car had been watched for being involved in phone theft and "one chance" robbery in Ibadan.
The FRSC added, "After questioning by the Sector Commander and Deputy Corps Commander Operations, the case was passed to the Nigeria Police Force, Eleyele Division, for a full investigation and possible prosecution."
The Corps said this arrest shows how important it is for patrol officers to be alert and for security agencies to work together.
"The incident highlights the key role of FRSC patrol officers in making roads safer and supporting security efforts through being alert, quick to respond, and working with other law enforcement agencies," the statement said.
The FRSC also told the public to stay alert and report any suspicious activities right away.
