Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has urged members of the 2026 Batch “B” Stream I of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to embrace patriotism, discipline, and security awareness as they begin their year of national service.
The governor spoke during the opening of the 2026 NYSC Batch “B” Stream I Orientation Course at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Gateway Stadium, Sagamu.
While representing the governor, Mr Wasiu Isiaka, the Commissioner for Sports Development, congratulated the corps members on completing their academic programs and being mobilized for national service. He said this day is an important milestone in their lives and shows their hard work and determination.
He praised the management of the National Youth Service Corps for running the program for over fifty years. He said it remains one of Nigeria’s best platforms for national integration, youth development, and nation-building.
The governor pointed out that this deployment comes at a crucial time for Nigeria. He encouraged the corps members to use their knowledge and creativity to help build a better, more peaceful, and united Nigeria.
“This ceremony marks your formal induction into this noble service. It is the beginning of a journey that will challenge you to grow, broaden your horizons, and prepare you for greater responsibilities in life,” he said.
Mr Abiodun explained that the orientation program is designed to give participants skills in leadership, citizenship, entrepreneurship, teamwork, security awareness, and community development. He urged them to take part in all camp activities.
He also stressed his administration’s commitment to youth empowerment through the “Building Our Future Together” agenda. He mentioned plans to create jobs and improve human capital development across the state.
Programs like the Ogun State Job Portal, support for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone, the Gateway International Airport and Aerotropolis Project, and digital innovation initiatives under Ogun TechHub were highlighted as key efforts to create opportunities for young people.
Mr Abiodun reminded the corps members to stay alert about security throughout their service year. He warned them against actions that could make them targets for criminals.
He advised them not to let strangers use their mobile phones, not to allow unknown people to handle their bank accounts, and to avoid getting into vehicles from unauthorized places or accepting rides from unfamiliar individuals. He also cautioned against receiving large gifts from questionable sources.
“As educated individuals, you play an important role in our security. If you see something, say something,” the governor stated.
He assured the corps members that the government is committed to protecting lives and property. He encouraged them to report any suspicious activities to camp authorities and security agencies.
The governor also called on the corps members to obey the law, build good relationships with their host communities, and avoid actions that could disturb peace and security.
With the country moving closer to another electoral cycle, Mr Abiodun urged the corps members, many of whom might serve as election officials, to stay neutral, professional, and uphold democratic values.
“Do not let yourselves be used for electoral malpractice, violence, misinformation, or anything that could harm our democracy,” he warned.
He thanked the Ogun State NYSC management, security agencies, camp officials, medical staff, and others for helping to organize the orientation program successfully.
He wished the corps members a rewarding, enriching, and memorable orientation experience. He is hopeful that the service year will bring them new opportunities, personal growth, and fulfillment.
