Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has granted full pardon to 130 inmates as part of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary celebrations.

Mr Mutfwang also changed the death sentences of four inmates to life imprisonment, a statement from his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, said on Thursday.

The governor made this decision after discussions with the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, according to the statement.

The four inmates whose sentences were changed to life imprisonment are Zuhumnan Musa, Jeremiah Aese, Pam Lang and Thoma Danboyi.

Some of those who received full pardon include Kamshine Gomerep, Maju Sajen, Jan Thomas, Gody Victor, Imran Maikasuwa, Biplang Emmanuel, Peace Sunday, Salisu Usman and Geoffrey John.

Mr Mutfwang shared this news while celebrating with Plateau residents and Nigerians at home and abroad on the 66th Independence Anniversary.

He mentioned that this anniversary is a chance for Nigerians to think about the country’s journey since independence, remember the sacrifices of past leaders, recognize the challenges, and renew their commitment to a stronger and united Nigeria.

The governor urged everyone to work towards the country’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity. He emphasized that building the nation is a job for all citizens.

"The responsibility of nation-building has passed from one generation to another and every citizen has a role to play in building a peaceful, stable and prosperous country," he said.

Mr Mutfwang also called on Nigerians to stay committed to national unity, stating that the country’s strength lies in citizens overcoming their differences.

He praised President Bola Tinubu’s efforts towards national unity, peace and economic growth. He assured that his administration is committed to making Plateau a place where residents can pursue their dreams in a peaceful and just environment.

The governor also recognized Plateau residents for their resilience, patience, patriotism and contributions to the state and Nigeria’s growth.

He encouraged Nigerians to keep believing in the country and to help build a nation that honors the sacrifices of past heroes and meets the hopes of future generations.
