Gunmen have attacked Government Secondary School, Iluke Bunu in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State. Three people died in the attack, including a vice principal and a six-year-old child.

The incident happened around 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday. It left the community in shock and raised worries about safety in the area.

The Kogi State Police Command confirmed the attack through its spokesperson, ASP Saliu Afusat. A large group of armed men, riding about 40 motorcycles, invaded the school, likely with plans to abduct students and residents.

The police said the Divisional Police Officer of Kabba ‘A’ Division quickly mobilized a joint security team after receiving calls for help. They sent personnel from the police division, the Police Mobile Force, and tactical teams to respond.

Military personnel and local vigilante groups already in the area also joined the effort. The security teams engaged the attackers in a heavy gun battle, forcing them to run into the nearby bush.

“Preliminary findings show there is no strong evidence of a successful mass abduction of students or residents,” the statement said. “However, investigations and assessments are ongoing to understand what happened.”

Despite this, the police confirmed that three people lost their lives during the attack. “They include Mr Ganiyu Anifowose, the Vice Principal of UBE Secondary/Primary School, Iluke; Mr Sunday Jacob Alhassan, who was 70 years old; and Sunday Ayele, who was six years old.”

The police reported that one of the attackers was killed during the gunfire. A member of the joint security team got shot and is now receiving treatment.

The Commissioner of Police has ordered more search operations in the bush and patrols to build community confidence in the affected area. The police are still working hard to catch the fleeing suspects and prevent more attacks.

The public is urged to stay calm and help security forces by providing useful information. “We will update you as investigations and operations continue,” the statement said.
