Gvardiol Says Maresca is the Right Fit for Man City

Josko Gvardiol, a defender for Manchester City, has praised new manager Enzo Maresca. He called the Italian the "perfect" choice to lead the team after Pep Guardiola's exit.

Maresca took over as manager after Guardiola ended his impressive 10-year run at City. The 46-year-old officially began his role during the team’s pre-season tour. He led the squad in his first match, which ended in a penalty shootout loss to Inter Milan in Hong Kong.

Speaking to BBC Sport on Sunday, Gvardiol showed faith in Maresca’s ability to continue City’s success. He noted the challenge of stepping in for a coach with such a strong record. "The level is that high, and he has been chosen with reason as the manager," Gvardiol said.

"I think he has quality, has some new ideas, and also we need to see what we are going to do with the style of play, the football we are going to play and the tactics."

He added, "I think he is a perfect one, but of course, it takes time. It’s something totally new. It’s not easy to change the manager, so we will take time."

Gvardiol emphasized that the players need to support Maresca as he adjusts to his new role. "It’s our job to help him as much as possible and also to listen and try to adapt as quick as possible," he said.

He also mentioned that he has already talked with Maresca about his recovery from injury and his previous role under Guardiola.

Reflecting on Guardiola’s departure, Gvardiol said the timing felt right. He noted that the squad had sensed that Guardiola's time at the club was coming to an end after a decade of coaching.

Guardiola stepped down at the end of last season after leading Manchester City to many trophies, both locally and internationally. This marked the beginning of a new era with Maresca in charge.
