The minority caucus of the House of Representatives has chosen Afam Ogene, who represents Ogbaru Federal Constituency in Anambra State, as its new spokesperson.

This decision came during an online meeting of the caucus on Friday. Fredrick Agbedi, the Minority Leader of the House, signed the announcement.

The caucus praised Ogene for being an experienced lawmaker with a solid background in public communication. They believe he will do well in this role.

"Hon. Ogene is the Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress caucus in the House of Representatives and represents Ogbaru Federal Constituency of Anambra State. A ranking legislator and respected parliamentarian, Hon. Ogene brings to the role a wealth of legislative experience, deep understanding of parliamentary procedure, and an unflinching commitment to the defence of democratic ideals," the statement said.

As spokesperson, Ogene will share the caucus's views on important national matters and improve its connection with Nigerians.

"As spokesperson, Hon. Ogene, an award-winning journalist and editor, will articulate the positions of the minority caucus on national issues, ensure effective communication with the Nigerian people, and uphold the caucus’ constitutional duty of holding the executive to account," the statement added.

The caucus feels his appointment will boost its visibility and effectiveness in overseeing the government.

"The caucus is confident that his appointment will strengthen its engagement with citizens and reinforce the principles of checks and balances in the 10th Assembly," the statement said.

The caucus also asked the media and the public to support Ogene as he starts his new role.

"The minority caucus urges members of the press and the public to accord Hon. Ogene all necessary cooperation as he discharges this responsibility on behalf of the caucus," the statement concluded.

Ogene is a former newspaper editor and is now in his second term in the House of Representatives. He leads the NDC caucus and has been active on issues like governance, accountability, and electoral reforms.
