In today's workplaces, it is not the busiest worker who stands out. It is the one who solves problems and adds value.

Amaka just got her appointment letter. Like every fresh graduate, she was excited about starting her career. But she also wondered how to stand out in a place full of experienced people. A few days before starting, she visited her career mentor who had over thirty years of experience.

After congratulating her, he asked, "Do you know the fastest way to rise in any organization?" Amaka smiled and said, "I think it is hard work, honesty, and punctuality." Her mentor was impressed. "Those are important, but they are just the foundation for standing out at work. The quickest way to get to the top is to become a problem solver. If you are known as a problem solver at work, you will write your name in gold." Amaka listened closely.

Her mentor continued. "Most workers just show up. Few are known for solving problems. Train yourself to see issues before they become obvious. If you notice something that is not working well, don’t ignore it. Think of how it can be improved. When everyone is complaining, don’t join them. Always be part of the solution."

He paused and added, "When management starts to associate your name with solutions instead of complaints, you become valuable. Valuable people are dependable. Dependable people are unforgettable. When leadership roles open up, the first names considered are those who make the organization better." These words became Amaka's career motto.

On her first day at work, while other new employees focused on their job descriptions, Amaka also looked for the organization’s challenges. She often asked herself, "What problem did I solve today?" When she noticed delays in customer responses, she looked for the cause and fixed it right away. Her efforts were felt in customer service, project management, report writing, and even sales and marketing. She always tried to go beyond her job description to help.

Gradually, something amazing happened. When a tough task came up, managers would ask, "Has Amaka seen this?" When major projects were planned, her name was on the list. When leadership positions opened, she was among the first to be considered. Soon enough, she got several promotions and started mentoring others to stand out by solving problems at work.

Key Principles for Standing Out at Work

  1. Develop a Solutions Mindset. Don’t just find a problem. Offer a solution. Every problem is a chance to show leadership.
  2. Anticipate Problems Before They Become Crises. Great professionals don’t only react to problems; they see them coming. They find risks early and suggest preventive actions. The best firefighters are the ones who prevent fires.
  3. Go Beyond Your Job Description. Your job description shows your duties; it should not limit you. Look for ways to improve systems, help colleagues, please customers, and strengthen the organization.
  4. Become Dependable. When people see you as reliable, opportunities will come. Dependability is a key part of professional success.
  5. Think Like the Owner. When you think like an owner, management will see you as a leader.
  6. Chase Value. When your work improves productivity, profit, customer satisfaction, and team performance, recognition will follow. The loudest voice in any organization is consistent performance.
Organizations are always looking for people who can think ahead, solve problems, and create value. Be that person. Don’t wait for opportunities; create them by making work easier, teams stronger, and organizations better. You will succeed!
