Nigerian boxer Bolatito Oluwole, known as Black Tito, has a lot to share about her boxing journey. She is the 2023 GOTV Best Boxer winner. In this chat with Muthmainah Ishola, she discusses her boxing career, her titles, how she faces fear and sacrifice, the challenges for female boxers in Nigeria, and her big dreams.

For those who don’t know you yet, how would you introduce yourself?

My name is Bolatito Oluwole, but people call me Black Tito. I’m a Nigerian professional boxer and a fighter.

How did you get into boxing?

My boxing journey is quite funny. A friend of mine used to box, and I went to her training sessions. After watching her, I decided I wanted to start boxing too.

Where did the name Black Tito come from?

As I mentioned, my name is Bolatito, and I have dark skin. Black Tito represents who I am.

What is your proudest moment as a boxer?

One of my proudest moments is seeing how far I’ve come. Every fight and every victory has shaped me into the boxer I am today. I’m proud that I’ve kept pushing even when times were tough. For me, the journey is worth celebrating.

How did it feel to win your first major title?

Winning a major title felt special to me. It came from hard work, sacrifices, and discipline. It shows that the tough days were not wasted.

What has been your toughest fight?

Honestly, I don’t think I’ve had any tough fights yet. Maybe if I face Claressa Shields, it will be tough, but I am ready for whatever happens.

Have you ever felt scared before stepping into the ring?

Of course! I’m human. Being a boxer doesn’t mean I never feel fear. The difference is that I don’t let fear control me. I trust my training and get into the ring ready to do my job.

What is the biggest sacrifice you’ve made for boxing?

There are days when I feel tired, but I still have to train and stay disciplined. I’ve made tough choices because I know my goals, and I’m ready to work for them.

Do you think female boxers in Nigeria get enough recognition?

Female boxers don’t get enough recognition in Nigeria. I believe we deserve much more support and recognition. Many talented women are putting in the work, but we need more sponsorship, media coverage, and better opportunities. Talent is everywhere, but it needs support to grow. I want to be part of the change.

Have you been underestimated just because you’re a woman?

Yes, many people underestimate women in boxing because they see it as a man’s sport. But I see that as a chance to prove that skill and strength are not limited by gender. I don’t need to argue with anyone about that.

Are you as tough outside the ring as people think?

Outside the ring, I am a sweet girl. I can be playful, caring, and soft. Boxing is my job, but I don’t have to be serious all the time. I know when to fight and when to relax.

Could you date someone who feels intimidated by your boxing career?

I can date someone who respects me and supports my dreams. My career shouldn’t make someone feel threatened. I need a partner who is confident and proud of what I do.

I don’t expect my partner to be a boxer, but I want them to respect the discipline my career needs.

Have you ever wanted to hit someone outside the ring?

Of course! Sometimes people can really test your patience! But being a boxer teaches you discipline and control.

If a celebrity challenged you to a boxing match for a big prize, would you accept?

Why not? (laughs) If the offer is serious and everything is organized well, I’m open to a good challenge. But remember, I’m a professional boxer, so don’t just look at the money. Black Tito will be ready.

What is the biggest goal you want to achieve in boxing?

My biggest goal is to compete at the highest level internationally, win major world titles, and put Nigeria on the global boxing map.

What can the world expect next from Black Tito?

The world should expect more growth, bigger fights, and a stronger Black Tito. I’m focused on taking my career higher, finding the right promoters, and showing what Nigerian female boxing can achieve. My journey is still going, and I believe the best is yet to come. This is just the beginning.
