The Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, has told police officers to stay neutral and professional as the 2027 general elections approach.
Bakori gave this instruction on Monday at a lecture about election security. This event was for Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Heads of Tactical and Operational Units at the Police Officers’ Mess in Bompai, Kano.
The lecture aimed to prepare senior officers for their roles in ensuring security during the elections as political activities ramp up.
CSP Abdullahi Kiyawa, the command’s spokesman, shared this information in a statement on Monday.
Bakori warned officers not to compromise the integrity of the electoral process or take part in any political activities.
"The Nigeria Police Force has a constitutional responsibility to ensure a level playing field for all political parties and actors. Any officer found engaging in partisan politics or compromising the integrity of the electoral process will face strict disciplinary action," Bakori said.
He also urged commanders to respect human rights and uphold the law while carrying out their duties during the election period.
Bakori emphasized the need for stronger community partnerships and intelligence-led policing, saying that public trust is vital for effective policing and election security.
"Public trust is the cornerstone of effective policing. We must remain professional, respect human rights and the rule of law, and work selflessly to earn the confidence of the people," he stated.
He directed commanders to maintain measures for a peaceful and credible electoral process across the state.
The command confirmed that the Nigeria Police Force would provide security before, during, and after the 2027 elections, following the orders of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
The police also urged political parties, candidates, and their supporters to behave peacefully and follow the rules set out in the Electoral Act.
They warned that any actions that could disturb public peace would not be tolerated, and they asked residents to support security agencies by providing reliable information.
This announcement follows the recent coordination of security measures by the Kano Police for the Dawakin Kudu State Constituency by-election, which was reported to have been conducted peacefully. The police encouraged political actors to adhere to electoral guidelines.
