Kebbi Government Warns Against Political Violence Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Kebbi State Government has warned political parties, their supporters, and other stakeholders to stay away from political thuggery, violence, and destruction of property as the 2027 general elections approach.

The government condemned the recent violence and destruction in parts of Jega local government area. They described this incident as unacceptable and are calling for a thorough investigation to find and punish those responsible.

Abdullahi Idris, the Special Adviser to Governor Nasir Idris on Communication and Strategy, released a statement on Sunday. He said the government is very worried about the violence seen during this politically motivated event. He stressed that political differences should be settled through dialogue and lawful democratic processes.

Idris said, “The Kebbi State Government condemns the recent violence and destruction reported in parts of Jega and considers the incident unacceptable.” He urged security agencies to carry out a transparent investigation. He wants to ensure that anyone found guilty faces justice, “irrespective of political affiliation or status.”

Idris acknowledged the security challenges many states face but warned that insecurity should not be used as an excuse for violence, destruction of property, or attacks on individuals and political groups. “Insecurity should not become a pretext for violence, destruction of property, or attacks on individuals and political organisations,” he said.

He called on political parties, their supporters, community leaders, and others to show restraint. He urged them to avoid making inflammatory statements that could raise tensions. Political differences should be addressed through “dialogue, lawful democratic processes and peaceful engagement rather than confrontation.”

The government praised security agencies, traditional institutions, and community leaders for their work to bring calm and protect lives and property in Jega. They also expressed sympathy for residents who suffered losses during the incident, promising that their concerns would be addressed by the relevant authorities.

Idris warned that the administration's socio-economic programs and projects should not be harmed by politically motivated violence. He emphasized that “no individual, group of individuals or organisation can claim monopoly of violence under any guise.”

The government urged citizens to reject violence and avoid rhetoric that could threaten peace and democratic participation in the state. They appealed to religious and community leaders to increase prayers and promote peaceful living among the state's diverse ethnic and religious communities.

Idris reaffirmed Governor Nasir Idris's commitment to the socio-economic development of Kebbi State. He said the administration would keep implementing its programs and projects while working with security agencies and communities to maintain peace and sustainable development.
