Kingibe Calls for Fair Elections in 2027

The Senator for the Federal Capital Territory, Ireti Kingibe, has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission to make sure that Nigerians' voices are heard in the 2027 general elections.

She made this appeal in a statement on Wednesday as Nigeria celebrated its 66th Independence Anniversary. Kingibe said the country’s independence would not mean much if citizens cannot choose their leaders through fair elections.

The senator urged INEC to stay independent and run the 2027 elections in a way that truly reflects what voters want.

Kingibe also called on security agencies, political leaders, voters, and young Nigerians to do their parts to ensure peaceful and fair elections.

She said, “I wish to use the opportunity offered by this annual event to passionately appeal to INEC to be truly independent in action and name by conducting the 2027 General Elections in a manner that would reflect the will of the people.

“I also appeal to security agencies, political leaders, the electorates and the youth to play their respective constitutional roles at the elections, noting that the entire world is watching us.”

The 2027 general elections will be a big test for Nigeria’s electoral system. Political parties are already getting ready, and candidates are positioning themselves for the presidential, governorship, and legislative elections.

The lawmaker pointed out that October 1 should remind Nigerians of the sacrifices made by the country’s founding fathers and the need to keep democratic values alive.

She said independence stands for “freedom, sacrifice, and the resilience of our founding fathers who fought for the liberty we enjoy today.”

She added, “Their labour must not be in vain.”

Kingibe also encouraged Nigerians to think about the state of the nation’s democracy. She argued that true independence includes the right of citizens to freely choose their leaders.

She promised to keep supporting laws that will improve Nigeria’s electoral system and to represent her constituents in the Senate.

The FCT senator said she will continue “to being a voice for the voiceless in the Senate.”
