The Lagos State Public Works Corporation has announced that it will do most of its road repairs at night. This is to reduce traffic jams and limit disruption to businesses.
The General Manager of the corporation, Tokunbo Ajanaku, shared this news on Thursday while inspecting road projects in various parts of the state.
In a statement from the Director of Public Affairs, Samuel Ayetutu, Ajanaku said working at night helps maintenance teams operate better on busy roads. Daytime repairs often increase traffic and inconvenience drivers.
"We intentionally schedule many of our repairs at night when there are fewer cars on the road. This allows our teams to work with less interruption, improves efficiency and cuts down on the problems road work can cause for drivers and other road users," he said.
He also emphasized that safety measures are a priority during night work to protect both workers and road users.
The inspection looked at Godwin Omonua Road, Taiwo Street, Salamotu Street, Peter Agah Street and Ibeh Street in Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area, where road reconstruction is going on.
Ajanaku said these projects are being done under the orders of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to fix road problems, improve connections and create durable roads for the people.
He mentioned that the repairs will help with traffic flow, cut travel time, and improve access to homes and businesses, which will support economic growth in the communities.
"These roads are key links in Oshodi-Isolo. They serve residents, traders, business owners and others every day.
"Fixing them will not only help with movement but also lower transport costs, improve road safety, boost business activities and create a better environment for residents and traders," Ajanaku said.
He added that better roads will help people access schools, clinics and other important services, while also raising property values and aiding business development.
The general manager noted that the corporation has been working on roads throughout the rainy season with emergency repairs and regular maintenance, despite the challenges from the heavy rains.
He explained that heavy rain and waterlogged roads can make permanent repairs difficult, especially asphalt work, but the corporation is making sure that important roads stay usable.
"LSPWC has been working consistently, even during the height of the rainy season. Now, with the better weather, we are speeding up more lasting repairs.
"Our goal is to ensure that Lagosians have better road conditions across the state," he said.
Other areas checked during the inspection included Ogunnusi Road in Ojodu Local Council Development Area, Awolowo Way in Ikeja Local Government Area, Lanre Awolokun Road and Idowu Olaitan Street in Somolu Local Government Area, as well as Idimu-Ikotun Road in Alimosho.
Ajanaku said the inspection is part of the corporation’s effort to monitor and ensure that ongoing projects meet the right standards and benefit residents for a long time.
He acknowledged the concerns from residents in areas waiting for repairs and assured them that the corporation will extend its work to more locations based on road conditions, importance and available funds.
"We know Lagosians are looking forward to repairs and we appreciate their concerns. But we must understand that we cannot fix all roads at once.
"We are following a well-planned program of repairs, based on the roads' condition, their importance and available resources," he said.
The general manager also urged residents, drivers, traders and others to help take care of public roads by not dumping waste in drainage channels, pouring wastewater on roads or spilling fuel on asphalt.
He warned that these actions can speed up road damage and hurt the government's efforts to keep the roads in good condition.
"The government is responsible for building and maintaining roads, but citizens must also protect them. Misusing roads or blocking drainage can harm the infrastructure meant to serve us. Road care is a shared responsibility," Ajanaku said.
He assured everyone that the corporation is committed to continuing road repairs and reconstruction across Lagos. He is hopeful that good weather will allow them to work harder and provide better roads for residents.
