The Nigerian Law School has confirmed that a 23-year-old student, Faith Alayande, died after falling from the rooftop of its Lagos Campus hostel. She was in Lagos for an externship programme.
The school shared this in a statement signed by Aderonke O. Osho, the Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration, on Monday.
According to the statement, Alayande was a student at the Nigerian Law School, Enugu Campus. She was staying at the Lagos Campus hostel temporarily while doing her externship.
The incident took place around 4 am on Friday, August 7, 2026.
"Preliminary information indicates that, at about 4:00 am on Friday, 7 August 2026, the student fell from the rooftop of the hostel at the Campus and, sadly, succumbed to the incident," the statement read.
The Law School said it is working with the authorities and Alayande’s family to find out what happened.
"Management is working closely with the appropriate authorities and the family to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, ensure that all necessary procedures are duly followed, and provide further information as appropriate," it stated.
The Lagos State Police Command also confirmed the incident. They said the hostel matron reported it after finding the student unresponsive. Police operatives visited the scene and took the body to a morgue, while they continue to investigate the circumstances of the death.
Reports say the fall was discovered when a hostel mate and a relative found a suicide note. They then started looking for Alayande and found her unresponsive after the fall.
The Law School did not share more details about what led to the incident.
The institution expressed sadness over the loss and sent condolences to Alayande’s family, her colleagues, and others affected.
"The Management extends its deepest condolences and sympathy to the family, colleagues and all those affected by this distressing incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time," it added.
The management also requested that the public and the media respect the family's wish for privacy as they grieve.
"In view of the profound grief occasioned by this unfortunate loss, the family has respectfully requested that the public, members of the media and all concerned kindly allow them the privacy and space to mourn their loss," the statement said.
"The Management of the Nigerian Law School respectfully appeals to everyone to honour the family’s wishes and refrain from any actions that may further compound their grief at this difficult moment."
The Law School also promised to focus on the safety, welfare, and wellbeing of its students and staff.
